Harvest Festival 2025
Tradition, Culture, and Wine in the Heart of the City
The month of September in Jerez de la Frontera has a very special flavor: that of the freshly harvested grape. The Harvest Festival (Fiesta de la Vendimia) is one of the most anticipated events of the year and one of Andalusia's oldest and most authentic celebrations, officially declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
During these weeks, the city dresses up to pay tribute to Sherry wine and everything that surrounds it: tradition, flamenco, gastronomy, and a unique atmosphere that leaves no one indifferent.
At La Gitanilla Alojamiento & Encanto, we invite you to experience the 2025 Harvest. Enjoy the festivities and return each night to the comfort and tranquility of "accommodation with a soul" in the heart of the historic center—perfect for those seeking more than just a typical tourist plan.
The Origin of the Harvest Festival
What we know today as the Harvest Festival was born thanks to the initiative of a group of local intellectuals. Moving independently from the City Council of the time, they shaped an event that would soon become the very first Harvest Festival in Spain.
These celebrations were organized under the patronage of the grape growers' patron saint. Consequently, the first ceremony was deeply religious: a procession with the image of the Saint from the Church of San Dionisio to the former Collegiate Church (now the Cathedral).
Since then, the Treading of the Grapes at the Jerez Cathedral has become the most symbolic ceremony, continuing to move those who witness it to this day.
The Treading of the Grapes
Among all the events of the Harvest Festival, the Treading of the Grapes (Pisa de la Uva) is undoubtedly the most iconic and anticipated. Every year, on the steps of the Jerez Cathedral, the ancestral act of treading the grapes is recreated to obtain the first must of the harvest.
Freshly cut clusters are placed in traditional vats, and the "treaders," dressed in typical costumes, extract the juice that will eventually become the wines of the Sherry region (Marco de Jerez). This first must is presented publicly as the start of a new winemaking cycle, in an act charged with history, emotion, and tradition.
More than just a spectacle, the Pisa de la Uva is a tribute to the work of generations of winegrowers and winemakers who have made Sherry a global benchmark. With its blend of solemnity and popular joy, this act remains the true heart of the Harvest.
